how to: mittens from a sweater

First, start with a sweater that you’ve either outgrown, shrunk in the wash, or just don’t like anymore.

Next, you’ll want to trace your hand (or whoever’s hand your making the mittens for) and add about 1/4 inch around the edges.

Cut out your pattern and pin it to the sweater.  Make sure you pin through both sides of the sweater.  You will want 2 identical pieces for one mitten.  Do this twice.

Once you have the pieces cut out, turn the right sides inside so that they’re facing each other.

Pin them around the edges.  Make sure you left the bottom open you can put your hand in.

Now, sew them together either by hand or using a machine leaving a 3/4 inch seam.

Once you have them sewn, cut out some of the excess material around the curves in the seams.  This will make the mittens more comfortable to wear.  Just be sure you don’t cut the seam.

Turn them right-side out and Voila! you have mittens
